What Massage Therapy (RMT) Is
Registered Massage Therapy is hands-on soft-tissue work delivered by a Registered Massage Therapist. In British Columbia “RMT” is a protected title held by a regulated health professional, which is why you'll see it attached to the therapist's name rather than to the clinic.
It's distinct from relaxation or spa massage. An RMT takes a health history, assesses before treating, and documents the session — the same shape as any other regulated clinical appointment, even when the hour itself is quiet and unhurried.
What a Session Looks Like
Typically 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes
Your first visit usually starts with intake and a short assessment, so more of the booked hour goes to talking than it will next time. You'll be asked what you want out of the session and how much pressure you want. Undressing to your comfort level is your call, and you're draped throughout. Most people book 60 minutes; 30-minute slots are common for a focused area, 90 for full-body work.
Common Reasons People Book
- Neck, shoulder and upper-back tension that tracks with desk work
- Low-back tightness
- Recovery around training, running or a race
- Pregnancy-specific massage, with an RMT who lists it
- Headache and jaw tension
- An hour that's simply yours, with no clinical goal at all
