First check supplementary-benefits eligibility

For the income-based application route, BC uses adjusted net income, which accounts for specified deductions rather than just your salary. The government says families with adjusted net income below $42,000 may qualify; other eligibility requirements apply. It also lists separate eligible groups.

Use the government's application guidance to check the requirements and apply. A BC Services Card alone does not confirm supplementary-benefits status.

The contribution and visit limit are shared

The published MSP contribution is $23 per eligible visit, with a combined maximum of 10 visits per calendar year across acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, naturopathy, physical therapy and non-surgical podiatry. That is a shared allowance, not 10 visits for each profession.

For example, if two qualifying massage visits and three qualifying physiotherapy visits have counted toward that allowance, five of the combined 10 visits have been used. This example explains the shared limit; it does not verify anyone's remaining entitlement.

Check the provider and the amount you will pay

Provider enrolment and billing arrangements matter. BC's physiotherapy guidance distinguishes enrolled, opted-in, opted-out and non-enrolled providers. It states that services from a non-enrolled physiotherapist are not MSP benefits.

Ask the clinic to explain whether the visit qualifies, how the claim is submitted and the exact amount you will pay. Do not calculate your bill by automatically subtracting $23 from a website price.

A checklist for reception

  • I have supplementary-benefits status. Can you verify my eligibility for this visit?
  • Is this practitioner enrolled to provide the service under MSP?
  • Do you bill MSP, or do I pay and receive reimbursement?
  • What is the full fee, expected MSP contribution and amount I must pay?
  • Can you check whether I have eligible visits remaining?

Get these answers before treatment rather than assuming every clinic follows the same process.

Extended health insurance and hospital care are separate

An employer or individual extended health plan has its own contract, limits and claims process. Ask your insurer how that plan interacts with any MSP benefit; do not assume the two allowances combine automatically.

Hospital physiotherapy may follow a different care pathway. The advice here concerns MSP supplementary benefits for qualifying services, not every publicly funded rehabilitation program.

Once coverage and payment are clear, search for an appointment that fits your location and schedule. Knead does not verify MSP eligibility or submit claims.
